Abstract
1261597 Superconductors IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 4 June 1970 [19 June 1969] 31083/69 Headings H1A A5 A4B and A4D A superconductor assembly comprises a stabilized superconductor wire wound helically round a normally conductive tube. As shown, a plurality of wires 61 are wound round and soldered to a tube 60 of Cu, Al, or stainless steel. Each wire comprises a plurality of superconductor filaments 62 embedded in a normal metal matrix 63. The filaments in each wire may be twisted about one another to improve the stability of the conductor. Some of the wires 61 may be replaced by solid Cu wires and some by strengthening wires of stainless steel. More than one layer of wires may be provided on the tube which may have a cross-section different from that shown. The super-conductor material may be Nb44wt. per cent Ti embedded in a matrix of Cu, Cu base alloy, e.g. Cu-Ni, Al, In or Ag. Filaments of strengthening material, e.g. stainless steel or strong Ti alloy may be incorporated in the wires or the assembly may be secured to strengthening tape. The assembly may be wound to form an electromagnet.
