Abstract

1,059,075. Making billets; extruding. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. March 31, 1964 [March 29, 1963], No. 13320/64. Headings B3A and B3P. [Also in Division GO] Billets are made from metal strips, the metallurgic structure of which has been previously controlled, which strips are coiled and then enclosed and compressed in containers of suitable form. The billets may be either drawn or extruded to form nuclear fuel elements and other reactor components in the form of tubes. rods or plates. The metal strips may be obtained by rolling and may be surface-treated, e.g. by oxidation, nitridation or hydrogenation, on at least one surface before being coiled. In the manufacture of composite elements, two strips of different materials are either simultaneously or successively coiled. In a specific embodiment, one of the two strips constitutes a support of suitable physico-chemical characteristics, e.g. a magnesium alloy ribbon, and the other is a fissile or fertile material, e.g metallic uranium or a uranium compound.
