Abstract

1,015,197. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 18, 1962 [Oct. 9, 1961], No. 35477/62. Heading B6C. [Also in Division B3] A fuel element or assembly of fuel elements and cladding are placed in an envelope, the envelope is filled with powder and the powder is compacted, the block formed of the compacted powder and element or elements and cladding is removed from the envelope and placed in a flexible container, the unit comprising the block and container is heated and hydrostatic pressure is applied to the heated unit. The uranium-zirconium alloy plate fuel element 1 of a nuclear reactor fuel element enclosed by two zirconium alloy plates 2a, 2b welded at 3 is fitted in a flexible envelope 4a, the envelope is filled with zirconium oxide powder and compacted. The block of compacted powder and element and cladding is removed from the envelope and placed in a stainless steel container 4b. The unit comprising the block and container is placed in a furnace at 850‹ C. and the heated unit is immersed in cold oil 7 in a container 6, the oil being supplied to a conduit 8 from a compressor. Subsequent thermal treatment may complete diffusion. A number of clad elements may subsequently be joined by welding. The flexible container may be of plastic material, the compaction may be by hydrostatic pressure or in a press and the powder may be magnesium oxide or aluminium oxide. A number of similar platetype cladding assemblies may be clad and bonded simultaneously.
