Abstract

The active fuel material is mixed with a metallic hydride moderator material and is esp. in pellet form. The hydrogen diffusion barrier is a layer of Al, or an Al alloy interposed between the pellets and the sheath and in contact with both. The alloy may have a m.pt. of over 600 degrees C and esp. contain 2 at. % Cr and 1-2 at.% Zr or 2 at.% Mn or may have a m.pt. below 600 degrees C and contain-esp. 25% Sn or Zn. The pellets are first filled into the sheath and further compressed on shrunk fitted. ceramic spacers may be inlet in recesses in the Al tube.
