Description

E. E. SLICK. METHOD OF MAKING RETURN L S I APPLICATION FILED SEPT 26, 19m. v 1,426,324.. P t nted Aug- 15, 1922.
EDWIN E. SLICK, 0F JOHNSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA,
METHOD OF MAKING RETURN US.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented A g, 15 1922;
Application filed September 26,1919. Serial No. 326,624.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN E. SLICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Cambrla and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Methods of Making Return Ls, of which the following 1s a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a section through the V-shaped metal blank from which the return L is made;
Figure 2 is a section of said blank after its legs are pierced;
Figure 3 is a section showing the bending of the legs;
Figure 4 is a similar section through the completed L; and
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view.
The present invention relates to return Us and method of making. By return Ls are meant the U-shaped pipe fittings into which two pipes are secured to get a reversal of direction. In forming the return L a V-shaped blank 2 is first forged. The blank 2 has two solid legs 3 and 4 of circular cross section which come together to form the nose 5 ot the V. The legs of this V-shaped forging 2 are pierced, preferably by a round nosed drill, so as to form the openings 6 and 7 which meet at 8 inthe point of the V. The drilled legs 3 and 4 are then bent into parallelism, as shownjn Figure 3., This may be done in any suitable way. preferably by bringing the drilled blank to a proper heat and then bending the legs 3 and 4 by mandrels and dies. After the legs 3 and 4 are bent parallel they are internally threaded,
as shown in Figure 4, to form the completed L. If the L is to be used on unthreaded pipe the legs need not be threaded.
The return L is entirely seamless, has maximum strength and is made by simple operations. a
- The present invention is not limited to its illustrated details but may be otherwise embodied within the scope of the following claims:
I claim:
1. The method of making return Ls, which consists in forming a V-shaped blank, piercing the legs of the V-shaped blank to forma V-shaped passage therethrough, a'nd bending the legs of the V parallel, substantially as described.
2. The method metal blank, piercing the legs ofthe V to form a V-shaped passage therethrough, and, then bending the legs of the V parallel, substantially as described.
3. The method of making return US, which consists in forging a solid V-shaped metal blank, drilling the legs of the blank to form a V-shaped passage therethrough, and then bending the legs of the blank parallel, substantially as described.
4. The method of which consists in forming intersecting holes in a solid blank of metal and thereafter bending the mouth portions of said holes parallel, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my. hand.
EDWIN E. SLICK.
