Abstract
525,469. Making welded chains. GORDON, S. H. March 30,1939, No. 10011. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Chain cables with transverse studs are made by uniting two half links 10 abutting along the minor axis of the link by automatic electricresistance welding, forming opposed seating surfaces 20 on the inner sides of the link by a machining operation and inserting a stud between these surfaces. The stud may be a force fit or may be secured by tack welding riveting &c. The surfaces 20 are straight in cross-section so that the studs may be inserted from the side, the surfaces either having a radius of curvature greater than half the distance between the surfaces to avoid tilting of a non- welded stud 22 or being concentric to suit welded studs.
