589,009. Making chains. CHAIN DEVELOPMENTS, Ltd., and SMITH, W. March 15, 1945, No. 6463. [Class 83 (ii)] Chains for operating pulley blocks &c. having links of predetermined dimensions are made by cutting predetermined lengths from circular or other stock, bending into half links which are then welded in pairs, interconnecting two welded links to provide a short chain portion of three links by threading half links through each welded link and welding them together, and subsequently building up in stages by interconnecting chain portions of ever-increasing length by threading therein and welding together further pairs of half links. The flash metal resulting from the weld of each complete individual link is removed as produced and the centre link of a three-link portion is also similarly treated after welding. Two three-link portions are then united together by welding a pair of half links thereto to form a seven-link portion and the flash of the new link is then removed. After similarly joining two sevenlink portions to produce a fifteen-link portion and so on until the chain is of the desired length, the flash of the remaining centre links is then removed, the chain being held in a channelled bed or frame. Chain portions having different numbers of links may also be similarly united according to the length of chain. The stock may be fed from a drum through a straightening machine and before bending may be heated to red heat in a furnace and bent before any appreciable degree of cooling, and the ends of the half links cleaned before welding. After the chain is complete it may be heated in a normalizing furnace and may then be tested and polished by barrelling &c. One or more flash-welding machines may be used to effect the welds. The half links may be bent to U- shape for links of round or oval shape, but for stud chain-links one or both halves may be D-shaped. Specification 589,018 is referred to.
