605,645. Making chains. TAYLOR, H. G. Jan. 2, 1946, No. 124. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83(iv)] Upsetting.-A chain link formed by welding two U-shaped lengths or a single length bent into C-shape, is formed from a bar or bars which are thickened at the parts A<SP>1</SP> to form the bends of the link by electrically heating each part between two electrodes and then subjecting to end pressure to upset or thicken the bar between the electrodes. In the former case, the bar is secured between a fixed electrode clamp B<SP>1</SP> and an electrode clamp B on a carriage C moved by a hydraulic ram, the ends of the bar being engaged by set-screws, and the clamps secured to the terminals of the secondary of a transformer. When the bar reaches forging heat, the carriage C is moved forward by the cam until the bar attains the thickness as shown at A<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2. The bar is then removed, bent on bending rolls and the two U-shaped parts united by flash butt-welding. To thicken a bar in two places, it is placed between three electrodes in line, the centre electrode being fixed and the other two moved by separate hydraulic rams.
