Abstract

234,343. Adshead, H. W. Sept. 20, 1924. Stretching; scrap, making articles from.-Metal links are converted into straight bars or bars of other desired configuration by dividing the link, preferably by cutting across the middle of one of its longer sides, clamping the other side to the face of a grooved former, and bending the unclamped portions of the link to the configuration of the former. The chain links, Fig. 5, are separated by cutting through a longer side 1 of one link and cutting sections 2 from the adjacent links 3, 4. The straightening device comprises a former 6 with a grooved face 5 of straight or other desired configuration and movable downwards by a screw 10 and handle 12 for clamping the unsevered longer side of the link against a stationary section 7, the curved ends of the link taking over sections 16, 17 on either side of the section 7. Sections 16, 17 are adjustably mounted in blocks 14, 15 movable away from and towards the section 7 by a right- and left-hand screw 13 driven by a pinion 18 from a reversible source of power. As the sections 16, 17 move outwardly from the section 7, the unclamped ends of the link are pressed to the configuration of the former 6. The sections may carry rolls to engage the link.
