Abstract
877,710. Welding by pressure; breaking; making tubes. MAGNETIC HEATING CORPORATION. Nov. 10, 1959 [Nov. 14, 1958], No. 38111/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a method of welding the longitudinal seams between pairs of metal parts advanced successively end-to-end past a welding point where the opposed edges of each pair are brought together under pressure at the vertex of a V-shaped gap, the opposed edges being heated to welding temperature by the time they reach the welding point, the forward and trailing ends of the pairs of parts are provided with interengaging portions by means of which the V-shaped gap is maintained as the ends of the parts approach the welding point. Strips or tubes may be so welded. Tube sections 11, 12 having interengaging projections 25 and recesses 26 on the forward and trailing ends, respectively, are fed by rolls past a spreader 13 to the welding point w where they are pressed by rolls. High-frequency current is fed round the V-shaped gap by water-cooled contacts 15, 16. The longitudinal seam welding also weakly welds the ends of the sections together. The sections may be advanced for subsequent treating operations before being separated e.g. by breaking. In a modification, Fig. 4, the interengaging projections and recesses are of dovetail shape. Specifications 748,528, 772,279 and 811,251 are referred to.
