Abstract
1,134,120. Welding by pressure. VEREINIGTE NE - METALL - HALBZEUGWERKE HETTSTEDT VEB. 4 July, 1966, No. 28048/66. Heading B3R. In welding together solid bars of copper and copper base alloys having a cross-sectional area of at least 1000 mm.<SP>2</SP> the ends of the bars are tapered, the bars are mounted in the clamps of a press, a sleeve is provided around each bar with space between the sleeves and the tapered ends to allow for an upset bulge of metal, the tapered ends are heated by gas burners and the heated tapered ends are pressed together to form a weld and produce an upset bulge. Copper bars 1 of square cross-section have their ends 2 tapered at 60 degrees and are mounted in a press to be brought together with sleeves 3 about their ends spaced to allow the copper ends to be upset to form an upset. The tapered ends of the copper bars are heated by gas burners to approximately melting temperature and are then butted. Undesirable oxide inclusions are forced into the upset, which may be machined off after welding.
