1,222,973. Welding by fusion; making heat exchangers. KONINKLIJKE MAATSOHAPPIJ " DE SCHELDE" N.V. 15 Jan., 1968, No. 2143/68. Headings B3A and B3R. In a method of welding a tube to a tube plate, or a tube or nozzle to a header or flange, by means of an internal gas-shielded welding process, e.g. using a non-consumable electrode, the tube end is machined to provide a portion 6 with induced external diameter which is inserted into a bore 12 in the tube plate until the shoulder defining the reduced diameter portion is a short distance from the rear of the tube plate, and the diameter of the inserted tube end is then enlarged, following which welding is performed. If, following the step of enlarging the tube end, the shoulder does not abut the rear of the tube plate, the tube may be thermally heated to cause longitudinal expansion thereof to effect such abutment, the, or a plurality of tubes, being in this instance secured between two tube plates by tie rods. The method may be applied to the fabrication of a heat-exchanger. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,054,666.
