Abstract

1,203,122. Welding by pressure. KABELUND METALLWERKE GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE A.G. 11 Oct., 1968 [22 Nov., 1967; 4 May, 1968], No. 48325/68. Heading B3R. In welding a copper workpiece to an aluminium workpiece, wherein the copper workpiece is driven into the aluminium workpiece or the aluminium workpiece is driven into the copper workpiece, the aluminium workpiece is heated and the copper workpiece is unheated. A short conductor bar is produced by heating a rectangular aluminium bar 1 in a furnace to 550-640‹ C., introducing it into a pressure application device 3 and driving the wedgeshaped tip of a copper bar 2, still cold and of smaller cross-section than the bar 1, into the bar 1. Aluminium copper eutectic, Al 2 Cu, is formed and is received in recesses 4 in the device 3. Copper conductors may be joined to aluminium conductors using such a welded bar, the copper bar and copper conductor being welded and the aluminium bar being welded to the aluminium conductor. The aluminium bar may be provided with an anodically oxidized layer. A heated ring of aluminium, anodically oxidized, may be pressed into the cold copper base of a semi-conductor device and then the aluminium housing is fastened to this ring by welding, soldering &c. Alternatively the heated aluminium housing edge may be driven into the copper base. It is stated to be known to form a wedge pressure weld between a heated copper workpiece and a heated aluminium workpiece.
