Abstract

1,222,477. Welding by pressure. KABELUND METALLWERKE GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE A.G. 2 April, 1969 [4 May, 1968], No. 17319/69. Heading B3R. In welding a copper component to an aluminium component, one component is pressed into the other while both are at room temperature and then the components are heated to a temperature below the melting point of the aluminium while still under pressure. A copper bar 3 is provided on its end face with a regular pattern 2 of wedge or conical projections and the end face is pressed into the plane end face of an aluminium bar 4 so that entry of air between the faces is prevented. The bars are then heated by a high frequency current induction coil 5 to over 548‹ C. and an intermediate diffusion layer is formed. In a modification the copper bar may have a wedge or conical end which is engaged in a corresponding recess in the aluminium bar. Projections on one component may be received in recesses in the other. The welded bars may form a connector piece for welding by known methods to conductor bars of copper and aluminium. In making a semiconductor envelope an aluminium ring is welded to a copper base by the method of the invention and the housing can be welded or soldered to the ring. Alternatively the housing end may be directly welded to the base by the method of the invention.
