Abstract
566,678. Making magnets &c. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and HOLME, T. Nov. 19, 1943, No. 19367. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion. -In the electric arc welding of heavy metal sections, such as sections of magnet frames for dynamo electric machines, the edges of the sections are first chamfered at 10, and wires 11 or strips of a soft metal, such as copper; are arranged at intervals between the surfaces to be welded and the inner and outer V-shaped grooves are filled with weld metal. The wires during welding are compressed to such an extent that the sections are in contact and though the weld is under tension on cooling it is not sufficiently so that it will crack. On sections about 9 to 10 feet in diameter, 8 inches thick and 3 feet deep copper wires of about 1/10 of an inch diameter may be placed 18 inches apart and welding effected simultaneously on the outer and inner surfaces over the bracketed lengths in the order 1, 2, 3 ... 8, starting from the centre and proceed. ing to the outer edges of the sections.
