Abstract

1448009 Soldering PHILLIPS CABLES Ltd 21 Dec 1973 [29 Dec 1972] 59576/73 Heading B3R In forming a continuous soldered seam in a corrugated cable sheath, e.g. of steel, having overlapped edges between which a solder strip is inserted, the sheath is inductively heated to melt the solder and streams of cooling gas are directed on to the seam. In an embodiment an induction coil 14 secured by pins 28 to an insulating plate 26 supported by a member 32 is connected to a transformer 24 by terminal bars 21, 22 and is held over the cable 12 moving from left to right in Fig. 1. Shoes 16 for holding the seam edge together are connected to the plate 26 to ride on the cable and a gas cooling shoe 18 is resiliently supported on the elongate support member 32 to ride on the cable. The shoe 18 is connected to a source of cooling gas by a pipe 34 and has a gas passage 40, Fig. 4, therethrough, blocked at one end, from which extend a plurality of outlets 45 spaced longitudinally of the seam and includes a cable contacting portion 39 to hold the seam edge together. The outlets may include several which direct streams to impinge on the same place on the seam. In operation the cable is fed from left to right in Fig. 1 at 90 feet per minute, the coil 14 is supplied with high frequency current to melt solder positioned between the sheath edges and air at 4‹ C. is delivered from 20 outlets substantially tangentially to the cable sheath to cool the seam. Nitrogen, argon or helium may be used instead of air.
