Abstract
1322799 Welding by pressure and fusion THOMSON-BRANDT 17 July 1970 [18 July 1969] 34902/70 Heading B3R [Also in Division H2] In making a superconductive joint having superconductive properties superconductors are joined together by metallurgical bonding and the joint is treated by cold working and heating to regenerate its superconductive properties. Superconductors clad with copper are stripped of the copper at their ends and the ends are joined by an electron or laser beam in a butt or lap joint. The fused zone is cold rolled or hammered and heat treated, e.g. in the case of NbTi heated at 400 C. for 20 hours to restore the superconductivity of the joint. The bared ends may alternatively be joined by placing them alongside one another in a tube of the same superconductive material as that of the ends to be joined and the assembly is compressed to effect cold welding. In another alternative an element 7, Fig. 1, of the same superconductive material as the ends 1, 2 is friction welded between the bared ends 1, 2 of the superconductors. Superconductors 8, 9, Fig. 2a, clad in copper 10, 11 and insulation 12 either single or multifilament, have their end faces pressed together for cold welding.
