Abstract
1298068 Welding by pressure BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 5 March 1970 [6 March 1969] 11911/69 Heading B3R [Also in Division H2] A method of joining lengths of superconductors which are in the form of filaments of superconductive material supported in a matrix of normal material, e.g. copper, comprises removing the normal material to expose end portions of the filaments and cold pressure welding the exposed portions to an intermediate member of superconductive material. The temperature is such that the crystal structure is not altered through the weld. Pressure may be applied either transiently, e.g. by an explosion or blow or for a period of time. The intermediate member of superconductive material may be forced between the ends of the superconductor filaments, e.g. by a transverse wedging movement or by screwing into a tapped recess in which the ends are positioned. Welding may be effected with slight heating or with cooling to bring the superconductor filaments to the temperature at which they become superconductive. The welding process may be followed by local annealing and the matrix material may be replaced around the welded filaments, e.g. by extrusion or clamping the welds between pieces of copper. Superconductive materials referred to include alloys of niobium, zirconium, titanium or aluminium.
