Classes 83 (1), 83 (2) and 83 (4). A transition piece for joining together, e.g. by fusion or pressure-welding, two metal pieces or articles of different characteristics is made by melting in immediate succession in a consumable-electrode arc-furnace at least two electrodes of suitable different metal compositions. The result is a casting with a transition zone of intermediate characteristics between the two ends. For joining together austenitic steel and ferritic steel, one electrode would be of austenitic steel and the other of ferritic steel, and they may be joined end to end as by welding to form a single composite electrode. The casting may be further treated as by forging and machining, and for joining pipes &c. may be made tubular by hot-piercing, and drawing out &c., or by machining.
