Abstract

1533522 Brazing; welding by pressure ASSOCIATED ENG Ltd 31 Oct 1975 [15 Nov 1974] 2639/77 Divided out of 1532628 Heading B3R In a method of bonding two pieces of commercially pure Al, an interlayer, e.g. a foil on a layer dposited electro-chemically, of Cu or Cu rich alloy including 95% Cu is provided and the pieces are pressed together at a temperature of 560-640‹ C. (i.e. below the melting point of Al but at least equal to the eutectic temperature of the combustion of Al and the interlayer metal to produce a eutectic diffusion bond between the pieces). Articles which may be so produced include an internally threaded member (Fig. 3, not shown), a slitted heat exchanger (Fig. 5, not shown), a heater exchanger having half tubes (Fig. 7, not shown) and tubes having flared socket joints (Fig. 9, not shown). Pressure may be applied by a differential expansion jig which, being of stainless steel expands less than the Al upon heating so that finger tightening of the nuts 19 prior to heating will apply pressure upon heating, which may be carried out at or above atmospheric pressure in a controlled atmosphere, e.g. Argon.
