Abstract

1,080,655. Making heat-exchangers; joining by rolling. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. Aug. 16, 1965 [Aug. 17, 1964], No. 35048/65] Headings B3A and B3M. [Also in Division G1. A heat-exchanger is made by coating a sheet 1 with a stop-off slurry 5 containing water and a metal oxide, superimposing a sheet 3 on the sheet 1 with the slurry trapped therebetween, bonding the sheets together and heating them in a reducing atmosphere penetratable through at least one of the sheets to reduce the oxide and release a gas which inflates at least one of the sheets over the coated area. The sheets 1, 3 may be steel and the slurry is preferably iron oxide and water applied to the sheet by silkscreening, stencil spraying etc. The slurry may be applied to both sheets either as a mirror image or co-operating parts. The superimposed sheets 1, 3 are bonded together by rolling and sintering in an inert atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen and the composite heated in an atmosphere of hydrogen or dissociated ammonia for approximately 10 minutes at 1800‹ F. The hydrogen rich atmosphere diffuses through the sheets and reduces the iron oxide to iron. The steam produced in the enclosed shape inflates the sheets over the area of the slurry. If the sheets are not of equal thickness the pressure build up inflates, the thinner sheet. Zinc oxide, zinc carbonate, copper oxide, graphite or cellulose may be mixed into the slurry in which case the tube is coated internally with zinc, copper or carbon. If it is desired to bond and inflate a pair of sheets which form a brittle bond when bonded together, e.g. copper and aluminium or aluminium and zinc, two sheets of stainless steel are inserted between the pair the inflation being between the stainless steel sheets. The composite may be used in a switching device (see Division G1).
