Abstract
591,343. Soldering. BAKER PLATINUM, Ltd., and DOWSON, A.G. June 4, 1945, No. 14059. [Class 83 (iv)] Silver is joined to iron or steels other than high chromium or like high alloy steels by interposing between the parts a thin layer of a silver-copper alloy containing 10-50 per cent of copper and heating in a reducing atmosphere to between 780‹ and 960‹ C. Pressure may be applied to complete the joint. The alloy is preferably the eutectic alloy containing 71.5 per cent of silver and 28.5 per cent of copper, melting at 779‹ C., and may be placed between the parts or may be flowed on to the steel in a reducing atmosphere or formed as a double with the silver prior to assembly. Heating is preferably effected at 800‹ to 850‹ C. According to the Provisional Specification the layer may consist of a silver-copper alloy containing 8 to 92 per cent of copper.
