Abstract
851,948. Making nuclear fuel elements; extruding; working at specified temperatures. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. Oct. 27, 1958 [Oct. 29, 1957], No. 34269/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In the hot-working of a metal billet 10 which at the working temperature is readily oxidizable and easily bonds with contacting metal, a carbon-steel jacket 11-13, Fig. 2, is heated to a temperature sufficient to oxidize its internal surface, the billet is hermetically encased within the jacket, the jacketed billet 16 is hotworked and the jacket is finally removed. In the manufacture of nuclear fuel elements, the billet 10 is made of an alloy of uranium with 10% molybdenum by vacuum-melting in a zirconium crucible and using a graphite mould coated with zirconium. The resulting ingot is heated to 1750 F., sheathed in oxidized steel or copper and hot-rolled to reduce its diameter; the sheathed ingot may be heated in a salt bath before hot-rolling. The resulting billet is then machined to its required diameter. The.jacket comprising a tube 11 and nose 12 welded together by helium-shielded arc welding, is heated in air to 1600 F. for twenty minutes. The billet 10 with machined end caps 15 and a sleeve 14 of zirconium, after degreasing with acetone, are loaded into the jacket, whose other end is then closed by a plug 13 welded thereto by helium-shielded arc welding in a dry box with a helium atmosphere. The jacketed billet 16, Fig. 3, is placed with interposed graphite discs 33 upon the ram 31 of an upstroke extrusion press having a container 23 with a tool-steel liner 28 supporting an extrusion die 29. The billet is heated to 1800 F. for four minutes by a high-frequency induction coil 34 and after lubricating the ram 31, liner 28 and die 29, the ram is moved rapidly upwards to impact extrude the billet wholly through the die and into a support-tube 25. The discs 33 enable complete extrusion to take place without producing a discard. The carbon-steel jacket is finally removed mechanically or by acid pickling, the ends of the extruded bar are cut-off, the bar is then swaged to a required diameter and cut into fuel-element lengths which are each end-capped with zirconium. Specification 851,949 is referred to.
