Abstract

A method of making a W-Re product having a low ductile brittle transition temperature comprises producing a cast W-Re alloy article, deforming the article by at least 50% at at least 2500 DEG F. and further deforming the article at a temperature below the recrystallization temperature of the alloy. The W, or W-base alloy containing at least 50% W, may include from 10% to 35% Re. Consumable electrodes, electron-beam melting or skull-casting &c. may be used to produce the molten, cast metal, and the alloy may be deformed by extruding, forging, rolling or swaging. In an example a W-25% Re cast ingot was machined to circular cross-section and its diameter reduced by more than 50% (e.g. 60-75%) by extrusion at 3700 DEG F. The nose and tail of the extrusion were cropped and the surfaces cleaned by abrasion. The extrusion was then pressed at 2400 DEG F. with a reduction of at least 60%. A specimen of the sheet was then rolled at 1800 DEG F. to further reduce the gauge. The reduced gauge may be further reduced by cold rolling. Instead of rolling the extrusion, it could be reduced by swaging at 2000 DEG -2400 DEG F. The temperature of further deformation may be below room temperature, and a reduction of at least about 5% is needed to produce appreciable improvement in ductility. Finally the product may be heat-treated and annealed.
