Abstract
944,094. Making pipe fittings; manifolds upsetting. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Nov. 2, 1962 [Nov. 3, 1961], No. 41522/62. Headings B3A and B3H. A method of making a manifold having a wall provided with stubs, in which the stubs are formed on a metal sheet from metal of the sheet and the sheet is shaped into the form of at least part of a cylinder and the abutting edges when a single sheet is used to form the cylinder are welded together or the edges of the said sheet when more than one sheet is used to form the cylinder are welded to the edges of another metal sheet also shaped into a part cylindrical form to complete the cylinder. A sheet is pressed into a half cylinder, formed with stubs 12, shaped into a cylinder and welded at 9 to form a manifold. In one embodiment a semi-cylindrical part is positioned in a die 14 having recesses 18<SP>1</SP> and heated, an upper die member 16 shouldered at 20 and carrying punches 18 is lowered to force the punches through the lead holes 22 to form stubs 12, the shoulders 20 simultaneously displacing the material downwardly to effect a thickening of the part in the region of the stubs and form a shell 25. The shell and a part 30 may be formed with shoulders 28 and recesses 32 into which the shoulders are fitted prior to welding to form a manifold which may be strengthened with stiffening plates 34 and ribs 36 formed between the stubs 12 during the pressing operation in a modified die 14. Alternatively, the shell portion may be made from a flat sheet having parallel rows of stubs which is subsequently formed into a half cylinder.
