Abstract
833,040. Making burners and non-circular pipes. JUNKERS & CO. G.m.b.H. April 16, 1957 [April 25, 1956], No. 12354/57. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XI] A method of manufacturing grid-type burners for gas-heated water burners, having burner pipes arranged generally perpendicularly to a header pipe is characterized in that the portion or portions of each burner pipe projecting from the header pipe is or are initially cylindrical in shape when the burner pipe is inserted into the header pipe and is or are then deformed, before the holes are made, into an egg-shaped crosssection tapering at an acute angle in the half of the burner pipe in which the burner holes are to be formed whereby to increase the resistance to deformation of the burner pipe in the axial direction of the burner holes when formed. Holes for receiving burner pipes 11 are first drilled in a header pipe 10 so that the burner pipes are a force fit in the holes and no additional clamping is required during soldering. The upper half of the burner pipes are then formed with plane surfaces 19 tapering to a convex edge 20 by means of dies 12 and 13. The die 13 has semicircular depressions 14 for supporting the lower half of each burner pipe and the die 12 has triangular channels 18 for forming the plane surfaces 19 on the burner pipes. Both dies are recessed to clear the header pipe and the solder seams. Finally, the burner holes 22 are drilled. In a modification, instead of the plane surfaces 19, slightly arcuate surfaces are provided using a die profile 24 (Fig. 5) and the lower half of each burner pipe is given an elliptical shape.
