Abstract

493,741. Electric welding. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 9, 1938, Nos. 4097 and 4098. Convention dates, Feb. 9, 1937 and Oct. 22, 1937. [Class 83 (iv)] In a method for the electric-resistance welding of metals which, owing to their inherent properties, are difficult to weld directly together by such process, an intermediate member of a metal having a higher specific resistance than that of the parts and capable of interfusing or alloying therewith is placed between the parts prior to welding. This member, which preferably has a resistance three times as great as that of the metal of the work parts, is heated more rapidly than the work so that the heat is first concentrated therein and is then given up at the welding points. Molybdenum plates 1, 2 may be spotwelded together by inserting a strip 3 of tantalum between the plates. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the process is also applicable to the welding of metals which are normally capable of being strongly welded. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
