Abstract

In a process for annealing stabilised stainless steel, i.e stainless steel containing columbium or titanium to prevent migration of carbon to the grain boundaries, an oxidising agent is added to the nitrogen-containing atmosphere in the annealing furnace. The nitrogen-containing atmosphere may be cracked ammonia and the oxidising agent air or water. Part of the cracked ammonia may be bubbled through water to produce an atmosphere having a dew-point between -55 DEG F. and +10 DEG F. for annealing temperatures between 1750 and 2050 DEG F. It is stated that steels given this treatment do not show weld decay after heating to 1200 DEG F.
