Abstract
699,880. Gas purifiers. CLAPHAM BROS., Ltd., and CLAPHAM, T. A. Aug. 28, 1952 [Aug. 28, 1951], No. 20313/51. Class 55(ii) A tower type purifier comprises a number of similar frames which are open at top and bottom, each having a perforated oxide supporting floor, the frames being placed one on top of the other to form a continuous gas-tight casing upon which is placed a gas-tight cover. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the purifier consists of three superposed rectangular frames 10 of channel section material which rest on a foundation frame 11. A cover 14 is provided on the uppermost frame. Gas-tight joints are made between adjacent frames and around the cover by rubber strips 13 which are compressed by tightening nuts 18 on swing-bolts 16. A perforated floor 21 in each frame supports an oxide layer 22, a short length of-pipe 23 extending vertically through the layer to form, with the pipes in the other frames, a continuation of the gas inlet pipe 27, the foul gas passing to the space beneath the cover and then down through the oxide layers to the outlet 26. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 2, the frames are of cylindrical shape and each has two conduits 23 and 30. Gaps 31 and 34 are left between alternate lengths of conduit so that the gas passes in parallel through single layers of oxide as shown by the arrows. To remove and replace the frames they are provided with lifting trunnions 19 which are arranged so that the spent oxide can be emptied from a frame by turning it over whilst suspended from the lifting gantry.
