[Also in Division F4] In a cooling tower in which packings such as are described in Specifications 776,071 and 837,601 are arranged in storeys 14, 16 parallel to each other, the packing is placed on a perforated or latticed support 20. A conduit 32 conducts water through parallel branches 34, 38 to the separate storeys and rotary spraying devices 44 distribute the water over the packings from arms 48. Air for the lower storey is drawn by a fan 30 through openings 62 near the base of the tower, passes through the packing 14 and is directed by a screen 64 to a passage 66 formed at the centre of the upper storey. The screen 64 prevents the passage of moisture-laden air from the first storey to the second storey. Air for the second storey enters the tower through openings 68.
