Classes 125(ii) and 125(iii) In closuring a container by the application of top pressure to the closure which has an annular sealing gasket on the inner surface of its top, a localized region of narrow annular form of the gasket is compressed to a greater degree than the remainder of the gasket by distorting the closure during the application of the top pressure. The closure may be held on solely by vacuum pressure or may comprise a disc-like top held on to the container by a peripheral clamping band or may, as shown in Fig. 9, comprise a top 6 having an edge channel 7 containing the gasket 8 and a split flange 5 formed with curls 6 which are pressed under a shoulder of the con-. tainer. Downward pressure is applied by a head 9 having a peripheral projection 21 which deforms the edge of the channel 7 to compress an annular region of the gasket. The lower edge of the projection 21 may be horizontal or outwardly sloping. As shown in Fig. 13, the head carries a rounded projection 21b which deforms the central part of the channel 7 and as shown in Fig. 14, the gasket fills a main channel 7 and a secondary channel 7b which is depressed either by a plane head or by the head of Fig. 13 either to lie in the plane of the channel 7 or to be depressed relatively to the channel 7. The head 9 may be suspended by bolts 12, Fig. 3, from a vertically reciprocable member 10 and is acted upon by a spring 14a. The length of bolts 12 is adjustable. Member 10 also carries an annular member 15 formed into resilient fingers by slits 16, the fingers acting on depression of member 10 to turn in the curls 6 on the closure. Alternatively the curls can be turned by a spring garter rolling on a sloping surface or by fingers sliding in a horizontal plane.
