Class 106 (v) [Also in Group XXVIII] In a grease gun, a housing 1 is connected at 14 to a source of grease under pressure and at 26a to a point to be lubricated. A piston 17 is loosely mounted on a spindle 18 that is loaded by a spring 20 and has a conical surface that engages a counterpart on the piston 17 to form a valve; the ends of the spindle are tapered to form valves with slats at each end of the chamber 16. In operation, when the spring-loaded rod 5 is moved by a manually-actuated lever to open the valves 9, 10, grease flows past the non-return valve 12 to act on the piston 17 to discharge a predetermined quantity of grease to the outlet 26a. Upon release of the rod 5, grease passes between the spindle 18 and piston 17 as the return stroke is effected by the spring 20. If the delivery is blocked, the rod- 5 may be reciprocated to cause additional pressure to be applied to the piston 17. The valve 30 may be opened to permit a direct flow of grease through the apparatus, and a relief. valve 33 is provided.
