In a scraper conveyer of the kind having a casing built up of sections attached together end-to-end and provided with conveying and return runs for the scrapers arranged one above the other and the scrapers extend between a pair of endless driving chains, a separate guide wall is detachably mounted on each side wall of 'the casing which serves to guide a scraping or other coal-winning machine, each guide wall having a ledge which extends inwardly over the path of a conveyer chain and serves as a chain guard. Fig. 1 shows the application to a conveyer comprising scrapers 6 detachably secured by pads 7 to endless chains 5 operating in a casing built up of sections each comprising bent sheets 1 secured at intervals by ribs 3 and a trough 4 welded to the sheets 1. Guide walls 12 are connected to the sheets 1 by screws 11 passing through distance shims 14, 15 and are provided with flanges 12a extending over the adjacent chain 5. The sections are coupled together by links 17 engaging over stops 16a on bolt-like members 16 provided near the section joints. The links 17 are of such a length as to leave a space S to allow the sections to be articulated relatively to one another. Sheets 18 preventing spillage are supported by pillars 19 engaging openings in the ledge 12a, the pillars being connected to the sheets by gusset plate 21. The sheets 18 may be supported by a horizontal flange at their lower edge being secured by screws to the underside of the ledger 12a. Pipe lines, electric cables, control lines or the like may be housed in the space between the sheets 18 and the pillars.
