Abstract

702,387. Endless scraper conveyers. HUWOOD MINING MACHINERY, Ltd., and BAINBRIDGE, F. Dec. 7,1951 [March 27, 1950], No. 7615/50. Class 78 (1) In a scraper conveyer in which the scrapers move in forward and return tracks which are superposed, the former upon the latter, andare made, in sections, the sections are constructed so that the upper sections are readily detachably mounted on the lower ones, and members are provided at the sides of the conveyer which are separate from both the upper and lower track sections and which are constructed to be capable of easily being releasably applied to such sections in a manner to maintain such mounting during the operation of the conveyer. As shown applied to a conveyer wherein the scrapers 5 are secured between chains 6, each lower track section 2 comprises angle bars 10, 11 welded to cross bars 12, 13, the wider cross bar 12 being placed so as to extend for about half its width beyond the bars 10, 11 to allow the adjacent end of the angle bars of the adjoining lower section to rest on this projecting half. The ends of the bars 12, 13 are upturned at right-angles so as to lie a short distance outwardly from the bars 10, 11, the upturned parts 14 of the bar 12 having extensions 15 bent inwardly and welded to the bars 10, 11 to form sockets 16 and also provided with welded stops 17, whilst the upturned parts 18 of the bar 13 are bent to form sockets 19. Each end of the vertical flanges of the bars 10, 11 is received at 20 and at the end adjacent the bar 13 these flanges have welded stops 21 to co-operate with the stops 17 at the adjacent end of the adjoining section 2. Each upper track section 1 comprises a trough 25 at one end of which is welded a cross bar 26 having about one-half of its width projecting to receive the adjacent end of an adjoining section 1. The cross bars 26 fit in the recesses 20 of the adjoining sections 2, the recesses being slightly larger than the width of the cross bars to allow slight lateral swinging movement between adjoining sections 1. The stops. 17, 21 are also spaced from one another to permit similar swinging movement and also to allow for rises and falls of the conveyer along an uneven floor. The cross bars are made wide enough to prevent any gap appearing in the floor of the conveying trough during, these swinging movements. Strips 27 welded to the sections 1 assist in locating these sections on the sections 1. In assembling the conveyer, the sections 2 are laid on the floor, and engaged with each other at the cross bars 12 by the co-operative stops 17, 21 and the sections 1 are mounted on the sections 2 with the cross bars 26 engaging in the recesses 20 in the sections 2. Side members 30, Fig. 6, are now applied one to each side of each pair of sections 1, 2, being placed so that their legs 31 are a little to one side of the sockets 16, 19 in the sections 2 and then slid longitudinally so that projections 32 on the legs engage in these sockets. In the modification shown in Figs. 9, 10, 12, each lower section comprises angle bars 44, 45 joined by cross bars 46, 47 and additional side bars 48, 49 welded to the cross bars and spaced by L-pieces 50 to form sockets 51, 52 to receive legs 58 on the upper section 41 and legs 60 on the side members 43, parts 61 on the legs 60 engaging beneath the L-pieces 50. Stops 53 on the bars 48, 49 co-operate with stops 54 on the bars 44, 45 of adjoining sections. The sections of the conveyer are disposed between a tail end and a drive head unit, the latter being provided with a chain tensioning means to keep the sections together and being constructed so that it can be used upright at the head end or inverted when used for tail end drive. A separate sledge-mounted electric or compressed air motor is provided in association with the drive head unit for driving a roller or drum of the unit through a gear box. The motor may be spigoted to the gear box and the latter is capable of use in an inverted condition so that drive may be effected on either side of the head unit.
