A grinding-machine shaft has bearings and oil seals at its opposite ends and a housing a below an oil reservoir d. A pump e driven by the shaft draws oil from d and delivers it into a so as to keep the housing full and prevent the presence of air therein. A non-return relief valve g allows oil to pass into d when the pressure in a becomes too great.
