In a stone-sawing machine, a number of circular saws are arranged on a vertical shaft for horizontal cutting, a vertical circular saw is also fitted, and the block to be sawn is carried on a movable table past the saws, the detached pieces being collected in trays pivoted to the frame carrying the saws. As shown, the block is carried on a support 5 which is hauled along a track 3 by hawsers 4. A number of horizontal saws 11 on a shaft 10 driven by a motor 8, and a vertical saw 18 on shaft 17 driven by a motor 21 cut off a set of pieces from the block as it moves past, these pieces being collected in trays 14 pivoted at 12. A rack and pinion 26 and 28 operate a worm and nut drive 6 when a clutch 29 is engaged, thus enabling the support 5 to be moved transversely between successive sawing operations, as the support moves along the track. The support may also be rotated about a vertical axis through its centre so as to present other faces of the stone to the saws.
