A machine tool, such as a circular saw, comprises a cross beam 4, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), resting at each end on upright supports 2, 3 and extending across a worktable 1, a tool slide 5 longitudinally movable along, and completely embracing, the crossbeam, drive means mounted on that part of the beam which embraces the top of the crossbeam, a toolsupporting shaft in that part of the slide which is located under the crossbeam, and a transmission 13 between the drive means and shaft located in at least one of the vertical parts 12, 14 of the slide, the longitudinal dimensions of at least those parts of the slide that are within the opening of the frame being short whereas the dimensions of other parts of the slide that are outside the opening of the frame are long in the lengthwise direction of the crossbeam and cooperate therewith for guiding the slide. The crossbeam 4 has a rectangular cross-section and is provided with rails 7, 8, 9 for guiding the slide 5 between the upright 2 secured to a table 1 carrying the workpiece 10. The upper part of the slide above the crossbeam carries a drive means in the form of a motor and changespeed gearing, and the part of the slide beneath the beam carries only the bearings for a shaft supporting the tool, such as a circular saw blade 6. The shaft is connected to the drive means by gearing 13 located in vertical parts 12 or 14 of the slide. The parts of the slide below the crossbeam and the vertical parts have a short length B for permitting maximum longitudinal movement of the slide between the uprights 2, 3 whereas the upper part of the slide has a length L for maximum guiding effect of the slide.
