[Also in Group XXIII] A device for tensioning and de-tensioning a band cutter 5 in a cutting machine is characterized in that the bearing 3 for the pulley 4 supporting the cutter is adjustable along a guide 2 by a lead-screw 10, the lead-screw being surrounded by an internally screwthreaded sleeve 17 which is supported for longitudinal movement relative to the machine frame 1 and arranged to be actuated by a lever 19 for limited movement in the direction of its longitudinal axis to effect tensioning and de-tensioning of the cutter. A member 20, which is secured to the sleeve 17, is provided with an inclined face for co-operation with a similar member 18 secured to the frame 1. To tension the cutter, the sleeve is rotated by the lever 19 to cause the member 20 to rise up the incline 21 to its upper position and the lead-screw 10 to slide the bearing 3 along the guide 2, the bearing being resiliently mounted on a collar 13 of the lead-screw. De-tensioning is effected by returning the member 20 to its lower position as shown and electrical contacts 22, 23 or switches are arranged on the frame and lever respectively to immobilize the driving motor of the cutter when in this position. The amount of tension can be preset by a skilled operator by operating a hand wheel 16 and locking the collar 13 by a grub screw.
