Abstract

1,188,271. Sawing. CONTINENTAL MACHINES Inc. 18 April, 1968 [28 Nov., 1967], No. 18334/68. Heading B5L. A sawing machine comprises an elongated base 15, a carriage 27 constrained to fore and aft translating motion on the base, a pair of spaced apart transverse members 31 rigidly fixed to the carriage and extending transversely to its path of motion, a cutting head 26 movable with the carriage and having a column 25 having a portion intermediate its ends accommodated in the space between the members, a saw blade 22 having a cutting stretch disposed ahead of and substantially parallel to the column with its cutting edge facing forwardly, means 37 on the column providing coaxial trunnions which project horizontally fore and aft therefrom, and bearings 38 on the transverse members in which the trunnions are journalled for supporting the cutting head for tilting adjusting motion relative to the carriage about a horizontal tilt axis parallel to its path of motion. The base has a supporting surface 17 on which a workpiece, such as a length of structural steel 20, may be held by jaws 18, 19 for cutting by the saw blade 22. The carriage 27 mounting the saw blade has rollers 32 running on guideways 29 on the base and carries the spaced apart transverse members 31 on which the bearings 38 are mounted, the bearings supporting the shaft 37 with its axis in the planes of the work supporting surface 16 and saw blade 22. The shaft 37 supports the column 25 carrying the upper and lower pulleys 23, 24 around which the saw blade is entrained. The column is adjustable about the axis of the shaft 37 so that the blade may make angled or mitre cuts by rotation of a screw 43 engaging a nut 45 connected by a pivot 46 to a block 47 slidable in a guideway 48 on the column, the screw being connected by bevel gearing 51, 52 to a splined shaft 53 having a hand wheel 55 at the front of the machine. The upper pulley 23 is mounted on a two-part shaft 78, 79 between arms 75, 76 extending from the column 25, and is driven by gear 68 and belt drives 64, 66 from a motor 58. The lower pulley is also mounted on a two-part shaft 78, 79 between arms 75, 76 which are joined to arms 98 and carried by a pivot 97 on the column, the arms being adjustable by a hand wheel 100 about the pivot to vary the tension of the saw blade. A shield 73 protects the lower pulley from shavings produced during sawing. The operative portion of the blade is turned through 90 degrees so as to have its plane parallel to the path of movement of the carriage by guides 34, 35 the upper guide being vertically adjustable.
