Band-saw machines; machine saws.-Relates to a band-saw machine arranged to cut in a direction at right-angles to the axes of the saw - pulleys, the upper saw - pulley m being slidably adjustable on a swinging arm carried by a sleeve f, which encloses the shaft y of the lower saw-pulley h and is mounted in bearings in the main frame a. The arm is provided with a balance weight j<1> and is swung about the axis of the pulley h, in order to feed the saw, by means of links 14 connected to a nut 13 on a screwed shaft 12, which is driven through a clutch 19, 20 and worm gearing 11, 10, 8, 7 by a shaft 6 carrying a friction wheel 4 engaging a friction disk 5 on the end of the speed cone p on a shaft q which drives the pulley h through toothed gearing r, s. The friction wheel 4 may be adjusted in relation to the disk 5 by a hand-wheel 15 acting through screw-and-nut mechanism 17, 18. The clutch 19, 20 may be disconnected and the shaft 12 rotated by means of a handle. The saw may be turned to cut in the plane in which it is fed by (1) twisting it through 180 degrees between the upper and lower pulleys, (2) forming it with two cutting- edges and, before its two ends are connected to complete the band, turning one end through 180 degrees relatively to the other, (3) turning the cutting-part through 90 degrees by means of guides. The cutting-part of the saw is kept straight by upper and lower guides w, x, the upper guide being carried by a holder 22 adjustably secured in a bracket 23 on the arm j, and the lower guide being pivoted to a holder 24 slidable in a socket 25 on a bracket o on the arm j and fitted with a roller engaging in a track 27 on the table b on the main frame. The guides are furnished with rotatable thrust disks against which the rear edge of the saw bears. When dealing with short or small work, the table may be traversed to feed the work to the saw.
