Abstract
689,986. Prepayment mechanisms for gas meters. METERS, Ltd., and MAHER, D. P. Sept. 26, 1951 [Oct. 5, 1950], No. 24321/50. Class 27 Coin action; thrust, multiple coin with delivery proportionate to value. The coin wheel of a prepayment gas meter is locked, when no coin is present in the coin holder, so that the meter cannot drive the coin wheel through the quantity mechanism. When a coin is inserted in the coin holder a of the prepayment mechanism illustrated in Fig. 1 it urges a striker b about its pivot c on the coin holder into engagement not only with the coin wheel d but also at b<SP>1</SP> with a plunger h which it depresses against a spring (not shown). The plunger h engages a forked tail on a catch j which normally locks the coin wheel d; when the plunger h is depressed it turns the catch j about its pivot k on the casing out of engagement with the coin wheel. In the two-coin construction of Fig. 4 the plunger h is moved by a striker (not shown) which engages one of two coin wheels d, d<SP>1</SP>, according to how. far it is moved by the inserted coin. The plunger h carries a catch portion o which locks both coin wheels when no coin is in the coin holder, and locks one of the coin wheels when a coin corresponding to the other coin wheel is inserted. Quantity mechanisms; epicyclic. The. planet carrier f of the quantity differential shown is driven by the meter; the remaining two members e and g are sunwheels.
