Abstract
642,762. Prepayment gas meters. SANDERS, E., and RANSOM, J. Dec. 5, 1947, No. 32100. [Class 27] A gas meter prepayment mechanism, adapted for use with either of two coins, comprises a U-section coin-receiving slide 6, toothed at 6a for selective engagement with either of two quantity wheels 15, 17 and disposed within a second U-section slide 7 to which the slide 7 is pivoted at 8. The two slides are mounted between spaced plates 4 disposed radially on a rotatable inner front plate 5, the shaft 14 of the operating handle working freely in the front plate 5 and having an arm 13 for operative engagement with the inserted coin. When the smaller coin is inserted, the inner slide 6 is rocked about the pivot 8 and against the action of a spring 10 connecting it with the outer slide 7 which remains unmoved. The tooth 6a of the slide 6 is then in engagement with the wheel 15 which is consequently turned by the operating handle, the coin forming an operative connection between the arm 13 and slide 6. With the larger diameter coin, the further inward movement of slide 6 carries the outer slide 7 with it against the action of springs 11 connecting the slide 7 with the plates 4. The tooth 6a then engages the wheel 17. The mechanism operated by the wheels 15 and 17 is as described in Specification 628,884.
