[Class 27] In prepayment mechanism of the multi-coin type, such as are used in gas, electric, &c. meters, means are provided for selective operation according to the diameter of coin inserted. The coin is dropped into a shoot c located between two walls a, band rocks a pivoted lever o to bring a plunger p carried thereon opposite one of a plurality of orifices or slots v, w, x in a stationary frame plate k, The walls a, b &c. can then be pressed toward the plate k against the bias of a spring n to bring. the plunger p against one of a plurality of flat faces on a spring- returned wheel y. The faces are stepped back one from the other in succession, and the location of the face which is opposite any one of the holes v, w, x determines the angle through which the wheel is turned. The wheel shaft z drives a spindle z<SP>1</SP> through a one-way pawl and ratchet-wheel clutch, and full inward and outward travel of the walls a, b, &c. is ensured by a double pawl 6 engaging a rack 7 on one of the carrying rods f of the walls, the pawl being reversed by a lever spring 8 at each completion of the travel of the coin holder unit. The plunger p is yieldably mounted on the lever o to accommodate itself when it comes up against the plate k owing to the insertion of a wrong-sized coin. This mounting comprises a spring allowing sliding movement through the lever o or a swinging movement about it, as indicated at g<SP>1</SP>. The orifices v, w, x in the plate k are larger than the plunger p, and are covered by adjustable escutcheons u having holes larger than the plunger to allow for permissible variations in size of the coin. The tip of the plunger may be chamfered, or the plate k may have inclines to facilitate lateral displacement of the plunger when it does not enter a hole. The plunger may be inclined to the lever o to cause the latter to move away from the coin slightly when the holder is pressed home, and allow the coin to drop into its receptacle.
