The article delivery drum 42 and external operating handle 12 of a vending machine are normally prevented from rotation by the engagement of a spring-loaded latch 19 with a stop 23 on a coin drum 18 and the coin drum has two or more slots 20, 21 of differing depths so that, for example, a threepenny-piece in the shallower slot 20 or the equivalent three pennies in the deeper slot 21 will raise the latch clear of the stop. Two coin selection mechanisms test inserted coins and direct coins of the appropriate denomination through shoots to the corresponding slots in the coin drum. The latch 19 is pivoted at 27 and has a wedge-shaped end 30 positioned to engage the stop 23. A slot 44 is provided in the latch over the slot 21 and is of a width narrower than the total width of three pennies but greater than the width of two pennies so that the lever is not raised until three pennies are in the slot. The delivering drum 42 has a platform 43 with an edge which moves an article forward for delivery while a portion of the platform concentric with the drum raises the stack in the magazine. A full-stroke pawl and ratchet 34, 33 is provided and a spring returns the drum and operating handle to initial position after delivery. According to the Provisional Specification, the delivery spindle may be moved round in steps for each operation of the handle or four angularly-spaced pairs of coin slots may be provided in the coin drum. Also, two latches and coin drum stops may be provided so that coins must be present in both slots before the operating handle is freed.
