[Class 27] In a multi-coin prepayment mechanism for gas &c. meters having coin-controlled driving wheels connected through change-speed gearing to the quantity-mechanism so that the drive is dependent on the value of the coin inserted, the driving wheels and gearing are both arranged within the casing enclosing the coin-pocket mechanism. When a penny or shilling is inserted through a slot 10 in a face plate 11, Fig. 1, a slide 13 is depressed and a tooth 14 is engaged either with a " penny " wheel 16 or with a " shilling " wheel 15. At the same time the coin connects a slotted disc 17 rotatable by a knob 18 with the slide. The change-speed gearing is as described in Specification 448,868. It comprises a planetary gearing of which the " coin " wheel that is being rotated is the driving element, the other " coin " wheel being held by a pawl 19 as the reaction element. The driven element of the gearing 20 carrying the wheel 21 includes the planet carrier 22 which encloses the double planet-wheel 23, the externally - toothed sun - wheel 24 and the internally-toothed annulus 25, the wheel 24 and annulus 25 being fast respectively with the wheels 16, 15. The gearing is thus sealed and can run in an oil bath. The wheels 15, 16 and the gearing 22 ... 25 are arranged within the casing 12 of the coin-pocket mechanism. In the form shown in Fig. 2, where the toothed annulus 26 is the driven member, this is carried by a casing 27 which encloses the double planet wheel 28 and the internally-toothed annulus 29.
