[Class 27.] In prepayment mechanism for gas and like meters of the kind having a quantity mechanism that includes a differential or epicyclic gear, a change speed differential motion is provided for driving the disc or other element that controls the gas supply valve or the like to enable the mechanism to be adapted for use with coins of different values, for example pennies and shillings. As applied to the mechanism described in Specification 275,510, [Class 27, Coin-freed apparatus &c], the rotation of a wheel A, after the insertion of a coin in a rotary carrier 3, drives a planet-wheel carrier C fast on the spindle B of the wheel. The carrier C has a wheel D meshing with a sun wheel K loose on the spindle B and turning with a wheel J which is driven by a worm L on a spindle driven by the meter. The carrier has also a pair of wheels E, E<1> which gear respectively with one of a pair of change-speed wheels G, G<1> loose on the spindle B and carried by the hub of a disc H which controls the gas supply valve. By axial movement of the disc H, the wheels E<1>, G<1> or E, G may be brought into mesh according to the coin to be used. The disc H is locked in either position by an arm 5 operated by a lever 7 which prevents the cover from being fitted in position unless the arm 5 is depressed.
