[Class 27.] In prepayment mechanism for gas and like meters having a two-speed gear for operating the gas or like valve-controlling means from the metering mechanism according as the coinholder is set to receive pennies or shillings, the slotted sleeve a, Fig. 2, for rotating in known manner a valve-operating collar b, Fig. 1, on a screwed shaft c, is driven by a worm e on a spindle g engaging a worm wheel f on the sleeve. The metering mechanism, through a universal joint v, drives a shaft u wbich rotates the spindle g either through gears t, s and bevel wheels q, h, when pennies are to be used, or through a worm w and worm wheel i, when the coin-holder is adjusted to take shillings. The bevel wheel h and wheel i are slidably feathered as a unit on the spindle g and are moved by a bell-crank lever j, k, which is controlled by a spring o normally to keep the bevel wheels h, q in engagement, the arm k bearing against a collar m on the end of a plunger n, which projects coaxially into the coin-operated quantity wheel d. When the plunger n is in this position, the coin-holder is adjusted to take pennies and a part x thereon moves in a groove 3 in the quantity wheel. When the coin-holder is adjusted for shillings and placed in position, the part x will engage the plunger n and push it outwardly so that the bell-crank lever j, k is moved to disengage the wheels h, q and put the worm wheel i into engagement with the worm w.
