[Class 27] In a prepayment mechanism for gas &c. meters operable selectively by coins of more than one size or value, a train of epicyclic gears a ... a<3>, b ... b<3> is provided between the coinholder mechanism and the quantity-mechanism j ... j<2>, and motion is transmitted from the coin-holder to this train at different positions in the train, according to the value of the coin inserted, through a counter spindle l provided with a number of relatively movable selecting and driving elements l<2>, m<2>, n<2> selectively operated from the coin-holder. The coin-holder contains three quantity wheels l<1>, n<1>, m<1> secured respectively to the spindle l, and sleeves n, m rotatable on the spindle, the wheels or racks l<2>, n<2>, m<2> being also secured to the spindle l and the sleeves n, m respectively. The epicyclic mechanisms are arranged in alignment and the wheel m<2> meshes with a wheel a<4> rigid with the sun-wheel a<1> of the first epicyclic gear. The wheel n<2> meshes with a wheel a<5> rigid with the other sun-wheel a<2> and the wheel l<2> meshes with a wheel b<4> rigid with the sunwheel b<2> of the second epicyclic gear. The planet carrier a of the first gear is rigid with the other sun-wheel b<1> of the second gear and the planet carrier b is rigid with the planet carrier j of the quantity mechanism, one sun-wheel j<1> of which is rigid with a wheel o<1> driven by the meter shaft o. The other sun-wheel j<2> actuates a valve &c. operating disc p which is constructed and operates as described in Specification 456,719.
