Abstract
560,052. Prepayment mechanism for meters.PARKINSON & COWAN (GAS METERS), Ltd., ROLFE, L. H., and DOUGLAS, R. R. R. Aug. 5, 1942, No. 10938. [Class 27] In prepayment mechanism for gas &c. meters of the kind comprising multi-coin epicyclic gear 'and a metering epicyclic. gear, the two epicyclic gears are so combined that one of them acts in a planetary relationship to the sun wheels of the other gear. 'In the construction shown applied to a meter having a penny wheel 4 and a shilling wheel 2, the penny wheel is fixed to a shaft 5 carrying a sun wheel 10 and the shilling wheel is fixed to a sleeve 2a carrying a sun wheel 6. A friction washer 3 fixed to a slotted sleeve 7 is interposed between the two coin wheels. The sun wheels 6, 10 'gear with planet wheels 13, 19 mounted on sleeves 14, 18 on a shaft 23 carried by a planet carrier 9 which is loosely mounted on the shaft 5 and is formed as a worm-wheel gearing with a worm 26 driven by the meter. The shaft 23 is mounted in bearings in brackets 11, 12 on the planet carrier 9 and forms the planet carrier 22 of the second epicyclic gear which comprises sun wheels 15, 17 on the sleeves 14, 18, and inter-meshing planet pinions 16 mounted on brackets 27, 28 on the carrier 22. The planetary shaft 23 has fixed thereto a gear-wheel 20 meshing with a gear 21 fixed to a sleeve 24 carrying the driving member 25 of a Geneva motion through which the 'gas valve is opened and closed.A gear 29 on the sleeve 24 actuates apre-payment scale and last-coin device. If a shilling. is inserted and the shilling wheel 2 rotated thereby its sun-wheel 6 drives the wheel 13 and rotates the sun-wheel 15 of the second epicyclic gear ; this reacting on the stationary sun-wheel 10 of the penny wheel 4 causes the shaft 23 to rotate and open the gas valve through the gears 20, 21. In a similar manner, when a penny is inserted the penny wheel 4 drives the gearing 20, 21 through the sun-wheel 10 and' planet gear 19 reacting on the stationary shilling sunwheel 6. The ratios of the gears 6, 13 and 19, 10 between the shilling and penny wheels is 12 : 1. 'The meter closes the gas valve in the - usual manner through 'the worm 26 and planet carrier 9 as the quantity paid for is consumed.
