In a prepayment gas or similar meter, the differential quantity gearing and also any gearing in the drive to the quantity gearing is enclosed in a sealed chamber 28 which can be filled with grease or other lubricant. The chamber 28 is formed in a cylindrical casing 12 by a partition 15 which divides off an extension 20 in which one or more coin wheels 18, 19 and a rotatable coin mechanism 25 are housed and by a closing plate 51 having a seal 50 through which the drive from the quantity gearing extends. The coin mechanism may be of the kind described in Specification 722,648. The sixpenny wheel 18 is carried by a shaft 22 on which the driven gear 32 of the quantity gearing is journaled and the shilling wheel 19 is carried by a sleeve 23 surrounding the shaft 22 and forming a fluid-tight joint with the partition 15. When rotated alone by a striker 36, the sixpenny wheel drives the gear 32 with a two-toone reduction through a gear 29 fixed to the shaft 22 and a double pinion 30 journaled on an arm 33 fixed to the sleeve 23 but when both coin wheels are engaged by a striker 35 a direct drive to the gear 32 is provided. If only sixpenny mechanism is required, the coin wheel 19 is omitted and the arm 33 is held against movement by removing a plug from a threaded bore 53 and fitting another plug with a pin extending into a bore 54 in the arm. If only shilling mechanism is required, the wheel 18 and gears 29, 30 are omitted. The quantity gearing comprises the driving gear 32, a driven gear 39 mounted on a hollow shaft 44 and driven by worm gearing 40, 41 and planet gears 46, 47 carried by plates 45 on a disc 38 fixed to the shaft 44. A prepayment indicator 56 is driven by gears 57, 58 and a cam 60 for closing the supply valve to the meter is operated by Geneva mechanism 62.
